Tech Tool Recommendations

Looking for the best tools on the internet?

I know that finding 20 new tools can be exciting! However, when you got to actually use one of them you become overwhelmed by all of the possibilities!  I have had the pleasure and nightmare of going through hundreds of tools over my 8 years as an educator.  I often am asked which tools I recommend.  I wanted to dedicate a spot on this website for my favorite tools! However, I know there are tools that I have never tried, please recommend some to me if you have a favorite tool!

**Check back often for more categories or to see if my favorites have updated!

Curation

Wakelet: This is a "New to Me" tool. I heard about it for the first time at ISTE 2019 while attending the FlipGrid after party hosted by Microsoft. I had been a long time fan of Symbaloo for the visual appeal. However, Wakelet offers some of the same block design. You can easily link videos, pdfs, Google products and websites into a carefully curated space. I have private Wakelet's for my own productivity purposes as well as specific curated spaces for my teachers who are looking for a resource. Please go to my "Resources" page on this website to see how I use Wakelet! If you like keeping digital resources organized to come back to later, Wakelet is your FREE tool!

Video Editing

WeVideo: This is a browser based Video Editing Software which means that you can use it on ChromeBooks. This was designed for educational use so it is very user friendly. All users have a free 5 minute limit every month. However, there is a paid version that allows you full access to the software for a reasonable price.  It takes only minutes to have a beautifully edited video right in your browser and saved straight to your Google Drive! I have also taught students from 5th-7th grade how to use it!

Capturing Screen Video

Screencastify: This is a tool that I would recommend to teachers, students, parents, administrators, technology departments. EVERYONE! If you ever find yourself trying to explain how to use a website, a digital tool, or how to find an assignment, you need this tool! You can record your webcam, desktop or browser in moments. It has a great extension in Google Chrome that works flawlessly. It has a paid version that I use to allow more time on my videos. However, the free version was great for me when I was still in the classroom!

Graphic Design

Canva: This is probably the tool that I recommend the most. People ask me how I make my breakoutEDU clues all the time. I have also had people ask me for recommendations on how to design a party invites or make a brochure. Canva is a VERY powerful and free tool that can do all of those things. Design infographics, social media banners, posters and even new GIFS! Canva is easy to use. There are some exclusive icons that must be purchased. However, they have thousands of free icons as well so you never have to spend a dime to look fancy!

Collaboration

Jamboard: This is an amazing addition to the Google Education Suite! While it can feel a lot like Google Slides in terms of use, the whiteboard like tools make it a much different tool! Upload a template as a background and have your students complete mind maps, comparison charts, Venn Diagrams, brainstorming sessions, webs and more! Students working WITH other students is a great way to model real world collaboration scenarios!
